Regatta Director Iain Murray shared specific safety recommendations with the America's Cup teams and the Event Authority on May 22; the Review Committee that was assigned on May 16 has stopped short of giving its own recommendations due to liability and insurance reasons.

Mini 12s on Lake Union

The singlehanded Mini 12s need a little more protection than the other classes racing on Puget Sound at the Sperry Top-Sider Seattle NOOD, so these scaled-down models of 12-Metres will race on Lake Union for the weekend. “It’s a lot more protected than Puget Sound,” says Fred Pot, the secretary of Seattle’s Mini 12 fleet, of the venue. “And, of course, these boats don’t have engines.”

The Atlantic Cup in Newport

The Atlantic Cup's inshore racing conclusion will take place in Newport, R.I., over Memorial Day weekend. You can catch the action from shore on May 25 and 26 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The stakes are high, as the inshore series is worth as many points as the three offshore legs (see photos from the start off Charleston, S.C., here).

The fourth stop of the Sperry Top-Sider NOOD Regatta Series will play host to an eclectic mix of fleets next weekend, May 17 through 19, in Seattle. From skiffs to San Juans, singlehanders to storied 6-Metres, a wide range of one-designs will descend upon Puget Sound for a weekend full of racing co-hosted by Seattle YC and the Corinthian YC of Seattle.

Artemis Capsizes AC72

Andrew "Bart" Simpson is confirmed as the sailor who perished in the Artemis capsize May 9, 2013, on San Francisco Bay. The two-time Olympic medalist won a gold in 2008, and a silver in 2012. Simpson was known as one of the happier people on the Olympic circuit, and he really loved his job, said friends and acquaintances.
